and there are days that make sense,
easy mornings, a quieter heart enough to make me give up my defense,
as I give in to the breeze and the body doesn’t have to choose a response,
my breathing is slow and there’s an unfamiliar chill in my bones,
so I wonder as I try to comprehend,
as I try to fit years into a little box that shreds,
I try to run her away from where she was confined but then there’s a question of what was that time?
I show her our pictures and sing her my favorite songs,
she doesn’t believe me when I tell her we’ve come this long
She asked me if she did okay, if she could have saved us any better,
I showed her the books we read and told her that none of this would be, if not for her
So she smiles, okay we can laugh and sing and dance, maybe leave our defense,
I hold her in my arms and tell her she’s safe, I’m sorry it took so long to make sense
